Craft Valley Fair

Designing a Cultural Mural

Project Overview

As the lead product designer, I was tasked with crafting a visually engaging wallpaper design for the Craft Valley Fair. This unique event was a collaboration between Hida City and four other cities - Takaoka, Himi, and Nanto from Toyama Prefecture, and Komatsu from Ishikawa Prefecture - all located in the Hokuriku region of Japan.

The fair was launched on October 1, 2022, and spanned over two weekends at the Japan Center, a shopping mall in San Francisco, California.

Project Duration

June 8, 2022 - October 20, 2022

My Role

I was entrusted with creating a visually striking wallpaper design for the fair, which was brought to life on a large metal mural approximately 9.84 feet by 9.84 feet (3 meters by 3 meters). The design process involved careful planning and strategic execution, ensuring the final product was not only visually appealing but also embodied the spirit of the fair and the unique cultural aspects of each Japanese city involved. Overcoming the challenges of effectively representing multiple cities on a single mural, I focused on highlighting key cultural elements and utilizing a harmonious color palette that resonated with the rich Japanese cultural aesthetics.

Tools Used

Adobe Photoshop was my primary tool, providing the flexibility and creative range needed to produce high-quality designs. The software's advanced features were instrumental in developing intricate details, achieving the right balance of colors, and accurately representing the cultural elements of each participating Japanese city.
